Electoral Barriers for PWDs Addressed by EC
The Ghana Federation of Disability Organizations (GFD) and its partners have intensified their efforts to ensure electoral inclusivity for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) ahead of the December 7, 2024, general elections. On Wednesday, GFD representatives met with officials of the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana at its headquarters to discuss measures aimed at creating a more accessible voting process for PWDs.
While the meeting was held behind closed doors, the GFD Executive Director, Madam Rita Kusi Kyeremaa, addressed the media afterward. She praised the EC for making progress in addressing challenges faced by PWDs during elections. According to her, the Federation has continuously advocated for practical solutions to enable independent and confident participation of PWDs in Ghana’s democratic process.
“We are pleased with the Electoral Commission’s commitment to making polling stations accessible by removing physical barriers such as large stones and gutters, which have been major obstacles for persons with disabilities,” Madam Kyeremaa stated.
The meeting also included representatives from Organizations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs), civil society partners, and allied organizations, who collectively highlighted gaps in the current measures and presented recommendations. These included the use of tactile ballot guides for visually impaired voters and ensuring polling stations are equipped with ramps to enhance mobility for wheelchair users.
The GFD expressed optimism about the EC's willingness to address these concerns and reaffirmed its commitment to monitoring and evaluating the Commission’s preparations for inclusive elections. The Federation also announced plans to mobilize PWDs across the country to participate fully in the upcoming elections and ensure their voices are heard.
Madam Kyeremaa concluded by calling on stakeholders, including political parties and civil society, to support efforts aimed at safeguarding the electoral rights of all Ghanaians, regardless of physical ability.
