1,000 Young Ghanaians to Benefit from New Fish Farming Initiative
At a milestone MoU signing ceremony in Ho, Volta Region, the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) CEO, Kofi Baah Agyepong, unveiled a significant partnership with the Fisheries Commission and the 66 Artillery Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces. This collaboration aims to empower Ghanaian youth through training in fish farming, an industry experiencing rapid growth and high demand.
CEO Agyepong highlighted that the partnership would create critical job opportunities by equipping young people with practical skills in aquaculture. "This partnership symbolizes our shared commitment to job creation and innovation, tapping into a market that is flourishing across the country,” he remarked. "With tilapia and catfish dishes becoming popular in both local and high-end dining spaces, the demand for quality fish farming is at an all-time high."
Under the initiative, YEA plans to train 1,000 young Ghanaians, providing each with a GHS 500 monthly stipend to support their living expenses during the training. The Fisheries Commission will lend its aquaculture expertise, while the military will ensure secure and structured operations. YEA’s involvement ensures that participants will receive comprehensive training and the support they need to succeed.
CEO Agyepong expressed confidence in the project's solid foundation, emphasizing that both partners bring unmatched experience and resources to the table. "We couldn’t have better partners—the Fisheries Commission's expertise and the Ghana Armed Forces’ commitment to security add exceptional value to this project," he stated.
With YEA fully funding the initiative, the program is set to make significant inroads into the aquaculture sector, generating employment and economic growth. Agyepong appealed to all partners to manage resources effectively for the collective success of the project and benefit of Ghana’s youth.
As fish farming becomes an increasingly profitable venture in Ghana, this partnership promises a pathway to self-reliance and long-term prosperity for young Ghanaians. The initiative not only addresses youth unemployment but also contributes to local food production and economic resilience.
