NDC Targets Job Creation, Criticizes NPP's Employment Failures
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced an ambitious plan to create 1.7 million jobs between 2025 and 2029 under a future John Mahama presidency. This initiative aims to absorb the anticipated 300,000 yearly entrants into the workforce and reduce the unemployment rate by 120,000 each year. The announcement was made during a briefing in Accra by the NDC’s Employment and Jobs Creation Committee, chaired by Goosie Tanoh.
The NDC’s strategy, dubbed MAN-UP-C, will focus on modernizing employment institutions, reorienting employer and employee mindsets through the 'Aspire 24' program, creating a National Employment Trust to provide financial support for startups, implementing a "Levelling-Up" program for inclusive employment, and coordinating efforts through a National Employment Coordination Committee.
The NDC criticized the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) for failing to tackle Ghana’s rising unemployment. Citing data from the Ghana Statistical Service, the NDC revealed that unemployment has nearly doubled under the NPP, from 8.3% in 2017 to 14.7% in 2023, affecting 2.1 million Ghanaians. Additionally, 70% of the employed workforce remains in vulnerable, low-paying jobs without adequate social protection.
The NDC emphasized that its comprehensive job creation strategy will revitalize the economy, providing hope for millions of unemployed Ghanaians and first-time job seekers. The party aims to reduce unemployment to below 5% by 2034 with deliberate policy interventions.
The Chairman of Employment and Jobs Creation Committee for NDC, Mr. Goosie Tanoh invited Ghanaians to support the NDC’s vision of building an economy focused on inclusive growth and job creation.
