GII Launches New Monitoring Mission to Address Campaign Financing and Electoral Corruption in Ghana
In a concerted effort to promote transparency and fairness in Ghana’s 2024 presidential elections, the Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII), Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition (GACC), and the Ghana Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) have launched a campaign to monitor campaign spending, vote buying, and the abuse of incumbency. This initiative aims to collect critical empirical data on the financial conduct of political parties and increase public awareness regarding the influence of money in elections.
During the media launch, held at the Ghana Integrity Initiative Conference Hall on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, the project team introduced a comprehensive strategy to track expenditures, use of state resources by incumbents, and instances of vote buying. The project also includes a public awareness campaign designed to shed light on how these practices undermine electoral integrity.
Representatives from public and private media houses attended the event, which also served as an opportunity to outline the monitoring methodologies and expected outputs. The campaign will focus on gathering data to support long-term reforms in Ghana’s party and campaign financing regime, which has been a subject of concern for decades. Civil society organizations have long pushed for reforms, citing rising campaign costs and the exploitation of loopholes in the current regulations.
As the 2024 elections approach, this initiative is seen as a crucial step in promoting accountability and ensuring free and fair elections in Ghana.
