Ghana’s Media Body Declares War on Illegal Mining, Pledges Accountability Campaign
The Private Newspapers and Online News Publishers Association of Ghana (PRINPAG) has issued a strong condemnation of the environmental degradation caused by illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, and is rallying its members to join the fight against the menace. In a press release, PRINPAG decried the destruction of the country’s water bodies, forests, and environment, which it attributed to the greed of individuals seeking monetary gain through galamsey activities.
PRINPAG emphasized that the ongoing devastation poses a serious threat to the well-being of Ghanaians and the nation’s future. The association called on its members to adopt a firm stance against galamsey by exposing those involved in these illegal activities. PRINPAG urged its members to publish the names and photos of individuals complicit in galamsey on the front pages of their newspapers and news websites to ensure public accountability.
In its commitment to the cause, PRINPAG encouraged its members to resist monetary or other forms of influence that could undermine their contribution to the national effort. The association also called for Parliament to demonstrate leadership in addressing the galamsey crisis, citing the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, as an example of proactive leadership.
PRINPAG further announced that it would launch a "naming and shaming" campaign in the coming days to expose all those involved in galamsey, regardless of their position or influence in society. The association warned its members against engaging in galamsey or accepting inducements, stating that any member found guilty of such actions would be expelled from the organization.
Additionally, PRINPAG pledged its support to the Media Coalition Against Illegal Mining and called for strict enforcement of environmental laws, leveraging technology to address the challenges posed by illegal mining activities. The association reiterated its commitment to protecting the environment for future generations and encouraged all stakeholders to unite in the fight against galamsey.
