Ngleshie Alata Chiefs Accuse Police of Complicity in Chief Priest’s Murder, Demand Arrest of Perpetrators

The Chiefs and elders of Ngleshie Alata held a press conference in response to the brutal murder of Nii Ayitey Konko V, the Chief Priest of Ngleshie Alata James Town, who had served in the role for over a decade. The spokesperson for the group revealed that Nii Ayitey Konko had faced numerous threats from thugs allegedly connected to Dr. Prince Asharku Bruce-Quaye and Nii Appiah, following the death of Obrinpong Kwadwo Ababio V. According to the spokesperson, these threats culminated in a physical attack on Nii Ayitey Konko, who had repeatedly lodged complaints with the Ghana Police Service. On August 29, 2024, he applied for an official extract from the police, but despite his pleas, no action was taken. The Chief Priest’s concerns were brought up again at a recent meeting organized by the Regional Coordinating Council, which was chaired by the Regional Minister. Victor Smith Insists Forensic Audit of Voter Register is Non-Negotiable, Cautions Electoral Commission

A leading member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Ambassador Victor Smith, has advised the Electoral Commission (EC) to do what is right to sustain the peace and tranquility of Ghana's democracy, which is anchored on free, fair, and transparent elections.  He stressed that the current voter register discrepancies identified by the NDC cannot guarantee fairness during elections, which could become a recipe for anti-democratic tendencies that may derail the country's development and growth. GNECS distrubutes 3000 cooked eggs to promote nutritional benefits

Report by Ben LARYEA  The Ghana National Egg Campaign Secretariat (GNECS) has prepared and distrubuted 3000 cooked eggs to the residents of Jumapo and it's environs as part of the drive to sensitised the citizenry about the essential health and nutritional values of the consumption of eggs. The event also forms part of the launch of the 8th edition of Ofie Kwanso ( Jumapo Home Coming)  to mark the celebration of Akwasidae festival of the Chiefs and people of Jumapo in the Eastern Region. GNECS was also supported by the American Soybean Association, World Initiative For Soy In Human Health (ASAWISHH) as well as various donations of 100 trays of eggs from Dormaa Ahenkro George Gyawu farms and Nick Jay Enterprise with additional 15 trays of eggs from Members of the planning committee of the Jumapo Home Coming. Human Rights Abuses Exposed as Activists Demand Release of Patriots Arrested in Galamsey Protest

Leading civil society organizations and human rights defenders have condemned the unlawful arrests and human rights abuses perpetrated by the Ghana Police Service during a protest against illegal mining, also known as galamsey.  The protest, spearheaded by young activists and environmental advocates, called for an end to galamsey, which has been responsible for the widespread destruction of forests, water bodies, and the environment in Ghana. In a press briefing held at the UDS Guest House in Accra, Hardi Yakubu, Movement Coordinator of Africans Rising, presented a joint statement on behalf of Africans Rising, the Economic Fighters League, Democracy Hub, A Rocha Ghana, and a legal defense team.  The groups expressed outrage over the violent response by the police during the three-day demonstration, which resulted in the arrest of more than 50 protesters. GJA Members Converge in Accra for Emergency General Meeting on Key Issues

Members of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) from various regions across the country have converged in Accra for an Emergency General Meeting (EGM). The meeting is scheduled to take place on Friday, September 27, 2024, at 11 a.m. at the Ghana International Press Centre. The EGM, which holds the same authority as the Annual General Meeting (AGM), is the highest decision-making body of the Association. The session is open to all members in good standing, and the decisions made will be binding on the GJA. Key items on the agenda include the General Secretary’s Annual Report for 2023 and the presentation of the Association’s audited accounts for the 2022–2023 period by the National Treasurer. Other important issues may also be raised under the "Any Other Business" section of the meeting. The Emergency General Meeting is expected to play a pivotal role in shaping the future direction of the GJA as it addresses critical matters affecting the Association and its members.

Dr. Kow Entsua-Mensah, Director of the National Cardiothoracic Centre (NCTC), has called for urgent action to address cardiovascular diseases (CVD) during the press launch of World Heart Day 2024. Throughout the month of September, various activities have taken place in Ghana to raise awareness about CVD, a leading cause of death globally, claiming over 20.5 million lives each year—most of them in low- and middle-income countries. In his speech, Dr. Entsua-Mensah stressed that while the statistics are alarming, there is hope. He highlighted that 80% of premature deaths from CVD can be prevented through simple lifestyle changes, such as healthier diets, regular physical activity, and stress management.
